African Green Pigeon
My favourite fun fact
Unlike most pigeons, African Green Pigeons spend most of their lives high in the canopy and rarely come down to the ground. They are also almost always seen in large flocks!
Scientific name
Treron calvus.
Afrikaans name
Groenduif.
Description
A beautifully coloured pigeon with bright green upperparts, yellow shoulders, maroon wing patches and soft grey underparts. Its vibrant plumage provides excellent camouflage among the foliage of fruiting trees.
Habitat
Found in woodlands, riverine forests, coastal forests, gardens and savanna areas with large fruit-bearing trees throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa.
Interesting behaviour
African Green Pigeons often hang upside down or stretch awkwardly among branches while feeding on fruit, behaving more like parrots than typical pigeons.
