African Fish Eagle
My favourite fun fact
An African Fish Eagle's grip is so strong that often if it catches a fish that is too heavy for it to fly away with it will swim to shore using its wings.
Scientific name
Haliaeetus vocifer
Afrikaans name
Visarend
Description
A large and powerful eagle with a recognisable white head, chest and tail, contrasting with a rich chestnut body and black wings. Its striking appearance and loud call make it one of Africa's most recognisable birds of prey.
Habitat
Found near rivers, lakes, dams and wetlands throughout sub-Saharan Africa, where it perches in tall trees overlooking the water.
Interesting behaviour
African Fish Eagles often mate for life, and use the same nest for many years continually adding more and more material until it becomes enormous.
