Acacia Pied Barbet
My favourite fun fact
Unlike most birds, Acacia Pied Barbets often nest in old termite mounds by excavating tunnels and chambers inside the hard outer walls to create a safe nesting site.
Scientific name
Tricholema leucomelas.
Afrikaans name
Bonthoutkapper.
Description
A chunky barbet with a red and yellow forehead, black back with yellow spots, black and white head and white underparts and a black throat.
Habitat
Common resident in woodland and savanna, especially around arid Acacia woodland.
Interesting behaviour
Acacia Pied Barbets often drum on hollow branches and dead wood, using sound to communicate and defend their territory.
